Being a student can be hard at the best of times, but when you decide in your forties to go back to education, that’s a whole different kettle of fish. As a student over 40, you’ll most likely have many other commitments to deal with, such as children, a mortgage, and full-time employment.
For me, I can say it’s been a rewarding but very stressful experience. I left school in 1985, went to college to train as a secretary, and even though I have always been in a job, after so many years of being in the same types of roles, I’ve never felt fulfilled, so in one mad moment I applied to the University of Derby to be a distance learning psychology student. That was 4 years ago, and in that time I’ve gone through numerous crises that have set me back in my studies, but I’ve stuck with it and look forward to finishing in summer 2018.
It’s been a hard slog, late nights and lots of stress but I have no regrets and glad I took the decision to study again.
Let me know if you’ve decided to go back to education after 40, and what kind of experience it’s been for you.
